Red Deer graduates move from classroom to the field
Life may be feeling a bit upside down these days with the Coronavirus pandemic impacting every aspect of our lives— from work to school and everything in between. But students at MCG’s Red Deer campus got a glimpse of normalcy last month with the official graduation ceremony for the Advanced Massage Therapy students.
Nine students participated in a safe, socially distanced ceremony on June 19 at the Red Deer campus, receiving their diplomas from the Dean of MCG Career College, Carmen Sheridan. On top of that, every single student is working full time, many as RMTs at various spas and clinics located around the province.
“Our instructors are actively practicing in the field, which means MCG students are being trained in the latest techniques, such as the Lensen™ Technique,??? says Sheridan. “That direct connection with industry also gives our students instant networking opportunities to clinics and other possible employers while they are in class. We’re setting our students up for a career right from day one of their program.???
There are currently more than 100 postings on indeed.com for Registered Massage Therapists in Alberta. That demand doesn’t surprise MCG instructor Heather Moore.
“The world of massage is my obsession and it fascinates me. It’s a profession that continuously evolves, and to be effective and be able to truly heal, you have to evolve with it,??? Moore says.
The global wellness economy was a $4.5 trillion market in 2018, and massage therapy falls right into that category. The diversity of the field is hugely appealing to many. While RMTs can operate as a general practice, there are many areas of focus for those looking to specialize every further. From pregnancy and maternity, to rehabilitation, chronic illness, sports, pediatrics and more, massage therapy has evolved from a luxury spa treatment to an important component of mental and physical wellness.
Registration is open for the fall semester
Advanced Massage Therapy is offered at all three MCG locations — Calgary, Red Deer and Cold Lake. Admission requirements include the completion of a basic massage program, either at MCG or another institution. The fall semester in Calgary starts September 11 and shortly after on the 18th in Red Deer and Cold Lake. The 10-month program is a blend of distance and classroom learning in a hands-on, practical setting.
