Top 3 Reasons to Become a Registered Massage Therapist

Health and wellness are often top of mind at this time of year, as people set goals to put their personal well-being at the top of the priority list. While this typically includes hitting the gym, joining a yoga studio, or simply indulging in a few spa services, for some, personal well-being starts with a change in career.

A recent market research report from Technavio expects the global health and wellness market to accelerate at a compound annual growth rate of almost six per cent between 2018 and 2022. The global health and wellness industry includes everything from health food and fitness equipment to preventative and personalized health.

With such an optimistic growth curve, it’s an exciting time to be in the industry. As the new year gets underway, we look at the top three reasons you should seize the opportunity and consider a career in massage therapy.

  1. An in-demand career. The continued increase in focus on personalized health is leading to a spike of job opportunities, both in Alberta, Canada and abroad. In 2006, the Canadian Tourism Commission indicated the spa sector alone was growing at a rate of 17 per cent each year. In our province alone, there are currently more than 300 job postings for massage therapists on Indeed.com.
  2. Flexibility. It’s not always realistic to work a 40-hour-a-week, 9-to-5 job. With family schedules and after-school activities, there is an increased need for flexibility while still being able to provide and put food on the table. As the industry grows and thrives, registered massage therapists (RMTs) are finding themselves with a unique opportunity to work as an entrepreneur. In fact, it’s so popular that NIMT includes basic business guidance in our curriculum to help students get up and running quickly.
  3. Travel the world. As the industry grows, massage therapy has expanded to be an integral part of many operations. From health clubs and spas to world-class resort destinations, you may find yourself skiing down the slopes of Whistler in the morning and treating clients in the afternoon.

Kick off your path to optimal health and wellness today! There are a few remaining spaces available in the Basic Relaxation Massage program at the Northern Institute of Massage Therapy, beginning January 25. Students will learn about basic human anatomy, body processes and how massage can support optimal health. The majority of the program content is online.
