An introductory level to gain knowledge of what assessment tools are used to identify risk of substance abuse or behavioral addiction. The student will learn how to complete the assessment through interview techniques and learn different models of change to support the individual.

This course will provide students with the knowledge to identify the signs and symptoms of addiction. Additionally, students will be introduced to the physiological and psychological components of substance abuse and behavioural addiction that impact individuals.

Types of Addiction

This course will provide students with an introduction to substance abuse and behavioural addictions. The student will gain the knowledge to be able to identify the behaviours of activity, compulsions, and risks that the individual is displaying. An understanding of the types of addictions.

Development of Treatment and Planning

This course will provide students an introduction to what types of treatment can be offered. The methods to case planning and the different types of interviewing models for goal setting. An overview of resource planning will be covered in the course.

Medical Micro-credentials

Medical Terminology and Anatomy 1

This course will introduce students to medical root words, prefixes and suffixes. Students will then construct and deconstruct terms related to general body systems as well as the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, blood, lymphatic and endocrine systems. Basic anatomy terms will also be covered to assist in the practical use of the medical language.

Course Hours: 50

Medical Terminology and Anatomy 2

This course will build on Medical Terminology and Anatomy 1. Students construct and deconstruct terms related to the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, nervous and sense systems. Basic anatomy terms will also be covered to assist in the practical use of the medical language.

Pharmacology

This course will build on both Medical Terminology and Anatomy 1 and 2. Students learn about methods of medication administration, pharmacodynamic actions and the four phases of pharmacokinetics. Students will review terminology about the preparation and distribution of medications.  Finally, students will be able to identify common medications.
